HIV/AIDS Testing Counseling, and Outreach Education
CHS conducts one-to-one and group education sessions in the Little Haiti/Little River and North
Miami areas. Sessions consist of providing vital information about HIV prevention as well as care and treatment for infected and affected individuals. Sessions are conducted in public places including laundromats, churches, and schools, as well as in private homes.

Under funding from the Miami-Dade County Ryan White Act Title I, CHS also conducts outreach activities that are designed to identify HIV/AIDS patients who are lost to medical care and re-engage them in treatment.

CHS conducts HIV Antibody testing as well as pre and post test counseling using ORASURE on a walk-in basis and by appointment with a certified counselor. This program is sponsored by CHS, independently of any type of funding as a service to the community. Tests are confidential to the extent allowed by law. (Read: CHS HIV/AIDS - The Early Years)

A significant number of low-income women living in Miami’s Little Haiti/Little River area are unemployed and uninsured. The CHS OB/GYN Clinic is the only free community clinic they can access for basic gynecological and obstetrical care. Patients with abnormal pap smears and those who are diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer continue to have difficulty accessing the specialty services required for their care. CHS relies on its partnership with the Jackson Health System and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to refer its patients for follow-up care beyond basic screening and diagnosis. In response to this need, CHS, in collaboration with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, opened a new GYN clinic at The Center for Haitian Studies, Health & Human Services. In addition to providing care and treatment for women from the local community, this new GYN specialty clinic serves as a key community site for area physicians to refer patients with abnormal pap results and/or advanced gynecological malignancies for treatment and follow up care.

The UM/CHS GYN SPECIALTY CLINIC also offers UM medical students, residents and fellows a unique opportunity to train under one of the leading practitioners in the field of
OB/GYN.

Dr. Jean-Baptiste Charlot has been a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FACOG) for over three (3) decades, and has served as one of the top surgeons in the U.S. Air Force from 1981 to 1984. From 1976 to 1981 served Attending Physician at Boston University Hospital, Beth Israel (affiliated with Harvard University) and as clinical instructor at Carney Hospital and St Margaret Hospital (both affiliated with Tufts University).

Dr. Charlot currently provides OBGYN services at the CHS clinic. He is on staff at Jackson Memorial Hospital and has a faculty appointment to supervise and train residents and fellows under the Jackson Health System/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Residency Program.

(The Internal Medicine Foundations (IMF) Program)

The Center for Haitian Studies/Greater Miami Health Education and Training Center (CHS/GMHETC) sponsors a 6-week  program for 2nd Year medical students. This program is designed to introduce medical students to clinical medicine. The program offers an excellent opportunity for medical students to develop clinical skills and to learn about culturally competent approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases among patients from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Purpose and Objectives:

This program is designed to introduce students to the practice of medicine.  At the end of the six week training course, the medical student will:

1. have learned patient interview and physical examination techniques, and have obtained basic skills in conducting physical examinations and writing patient reports;

2. be informed about culturally competent approaches to diagnosing patients’ problems and providing care and treatment.

Program components:

Clinical Training: Under the Program, students are placed in CHS/GMHETC-affiliated sites (hospitals/outpatient clinics) under the supervision of qualified physicians licensed to practice medicine in the State of Florida. At these sites, students interact with patients, and conduct physical examinations under the supervision of attending physicians.

Lectures/Conferences: Students are also required to attend conferences and lectures as part of their clinical training. These lectures may cover special medical cases, integrating clinical skills and knowledge of basic sciences, as well as presentations by students and group discussions.

Evaluation:

At the end of the training period, physicians/instructors who have trained students evaluate trainees' performance.

CHS offers a culturally competent clerkship in the fields of Obstetrics and Gynecology for 3rd Year medical students from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UM).

Students are assigned by the Director of Clerkship Rotation at Department of OBGYN. Students are trained and supervised by Jean-Baptiste Charlot, MD, FACOG. Dr. Charlot is an appointed Clinical Instructor for the University of Miami’s Jackson Health System/OBGYN residency program.

In addition to providing primary health care services, The Center for Haitian Studies, Health and Human Services (CHS) provides health education, research, community outreach services and medical education to medical students enrolled in local, national and international medical schools. From time to time, CHS participates in community activities which include crime prevention, literacy, case management, cultural projects, counseling and referral services for new immigrants who arrived in South Florida in the aftermath of the January 12, 2010 earthquake.

In collaboration with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, CHS currently conducts research on cervical cancer and breast cancer among women living in Little Haiti/Little River. The research:

1 - examines risk factors for breast cancer and cervical cancer among Haitian women living in Miami, and,
2 - identifies barriers to prevention and early detection of cancer among these women.
