The Center for Haitian Studies (CHS) is a duly registered Florida non-profit, tax-exempt health and social service organization founded in 1988 for the purpose of serving the disenfranchised populations of Little Haiti/Little River and North Miami. In keeping with its mission, CHS provides a wide range of services to members of the communities, including primary and specialty medical care free of charge to uninsured patients. Services include mental health, pediatrics, OBGYN, and case management. Other services provided by CHS include outreach health education, health literacy and cultural adaptation for new immigrants arriving in South Florida.
Over the years, CHS has received grants and donations from various federal, state and local entities such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Miami-Dade County, the Greater Miami Health Education and Training Center, The Jackson Health System, University of Miami Health Education Center and the Health Foundation of South Florida. As early as 1989, the CHS was renown as the main provider of HIV/AIDS-related services to Haitian Americans living in Miami-Dade County and as a unique resource center for the provision of direct support services to the underserved population of Little Haiti/Little River affected by HIV/AIDS.
Early in 2020, as COVID-19 began to take its toll on the populations of Miami-Dade County, CHS engaged in culturally competent public education about the Pandemic in the Haitian Community. In addition, CHS conducted a COVID-19 vaccination campaign in collaboration with the Jackson Health System and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Under funding from Miami-Dade County, in 2021 CHS expanded primary health care, mental health, OBGYN, laboratory services and Outreach Health Education services to address a significant increase in need among the patient population.
The key to success in the delivery of these services is based on: a) high quality of care through established protocols, b) compliance with physicians’ instructions, and c) capacity to increase the number of patients who obtain care, adopt healthy behaviors and comply with recommendations such as taking their medications and receiving flu and COVID-19 vaccines.
